Biography

Ivan Kostadinov Yanakiev is a conductor, music theorist and researcher whose work connects musicology, acoustics and contemporary computational methods. Since 14 October 2024 he has served as Chief Assistant at the Institute of Mechanics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where he researches applications of artificial intelligence and neural networks to music generation and analysis. From 2022 to 2025 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the same institute. He also serves as technical editor of the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences. Yanakiev completed an MA in Opera and Symphonic Conducting at the National Academy of Music 'Prof. Pancho Vladigerov', a professional qualification in cultural management at Sofia University, and the Advanced MATLAB for Scientific Computing course at Stanford University. In 2020 he earned a PhD in Musicology from the Institute for Art Studies, BAS, with research on A1=432 Hz concert pitch and open fifths. His scholarly interests include microtonal music, tuning and intonation systems, concert pitch, spectral entropy, consonance, music perception, mathematical modelling and artificial intelligence. He is the author of the monographs 'Microtonal Music in the 20th–21st Centuries: Theory and Practice' and 'Concert Pitch A1=432 Hz and Open Fifths', together with studies and articles published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, the Institute for Art Studies, BAS, the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and other venues. His conducting activity includes founding the 432 Chamber Orchestra in 2013, guest engagements with orchestras in Bulgaria and Croatia, and directing the Bulgarian Chamber Orchestra – Dobrich from 2020 to 2022. Since 2018 he has managed the 432 Hertz Foundation.
